“Ultimately, you don’t have to be only a maker. You are a business owner. And that means you get to add whatever revenue streams you want to add. Having a business means having a profit and you get to decide where that profit comes from.”

Lies You’ll Hear in the Crochet Business Community—And the Truth

Today we are busting some of the biggest myths that are holding you back from building a profitable crochet business. I bought into some of these lies myself when I was first starting out and I don’t want them to hold you back. So let’s bust these lies and enable you to step into the fullness of abundance that is waiting for you in your crochet business.

Lie #1: “It’s Easy! Just open an Etsy Shop and People Will Buy.”

This is one of the crochet business lies I see everywhere: Just list a few things on Etsy (or bring them to a craft fair), and let the sales roll in, right? Not quite! I believed this too when I started—just make things, go to a craft fair, and you’ll sell out. In reality, success takes strategy, consistency, and a real understanding of your ideal customer.

The Real Truth:

  • Success in crochet business takes strategy, consistency, and understanding your audience. Etsy is a tool—not a magic button.
  • Success on Etsy (or anywhere online) requires more than just listings. You need to master things like SEO so people can actually find your items, understand who you serve, and create a product line people want.
  • Running a crochet business isn’t rocket science, but it isn’t effortless magic either. Your growth depends on the work you put in—but it’s doable, and worth it.

Tips to Move Forward:

➡️ Take time to learn about Etsy SEO and visibility best practices.
➡️ Develop a clear brand and product line with your audience in mind.
➡️ Be consistent with posting and promotion—not just “set it and forget it.”

Lie #2: “Crochet Businesses Can Only Sell Physical Products or Patterns.”

If you think you can only profit by selling what you make—or your own patterns—think again. Many people, even other makers, believe this, but it’s an outdated view. You can definitely sell both, and make good profits doing it! Learn more about how to successfully sell both crochet items and patterns here.

And you’re not limited to crochet products and patterns, either! I don’t sell products. I sell courses and coaching, and that’s still a crochet business! There are so many ways to create income in the crochet industry.

The Real Truth:

You can build a multi-revenue ecosystem, including:

  • Memberships and retreats
  • Digital products: (coloring books, planners, templates)
  • Coaching or consulting
  • Tech editing or virtual assistant services
  • Supplies sales
  • Affiliate marketing and ads
  • Community-building (e.g., paid groups or courses)

You don’t have to fit in a single box. The crochet world needs more than just makers—it also needs helpers, teachers, organizers, and service providers. [link to post about income streams]

Tips to Move Forward:

➡️ Evaluate your skills: What do you love and excel at beyond making?
➡️ Explore digital or service-based offerings to diversify income.
➡️ Want new ideas? Try affiliate marketing or becoming a virtual assistant for crochet designers!

Lie #3: “If You Follow a Framework, you’ll have a cookie-cutter business.”

“Frameworks” often get a bad rap for being restrictive, but in business, they’re actually your best friend. I like to think of it like building a house: You need a foundation, but what the house looks like (or what your business looks like on top) is 100% up to you.

The Real Truth:

  • A good framework provides structure for your creativity—not a prison.
  • Frameworks are launch pads for creativity and allow your unique voice and mission to shine.
  • Without a solid foundation, you risk missing critical pieces, wasting time, and stalling growth.

Tips to Move Forward:

➡️ Embrace proven business frameworks as a starting point, not a limitation.
➡️ Allow your brand, personality, and audience needs to drive all else.
➡️ Build your “house” however you want—just make sure it’s on solid ground!

Lie #4: “You Have to Be on Every Social Media Platform to Succeed.”

Ever feel pressure to post everywhere? Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, Pinterest, YouTube—and the list grows daily. The result? Total overwhelm and burnout, especially as a solopreneur. Just reposting the same content to every platform isn’t the way, and being everywhere splits your attention—you become a social media manager instead of a business owner.

The Real Truth:

  • Focus on the ONE or TWO platforms where your ideal customer hangs out.
  • Master those platforms before adding more.
  • Simplicity in marketing leads to sustainability. Omnipresence is a myth—burnout is real.

Tips to Move Forward:

➡️ Identify your audience’s demographic and favored platforms. (Teens/20s? Try TikTok. Over 45? Facebook may be best.)
➡️ Go deep, not wide: Build quality content and engagement where it matters most.
➡️ Expand later, and only if it serves your business.

Lie #5: “You Have to Work 24/7 to Make Real Income.”

The hustle culture myth: If you’re not hustling every second, your business won’t succeed. Case in point: recently, I watched an episode of Financial Audit with Caleb Hammer. If any of you know who Caleb Hammer is, he’s a financial auditor who meets with individuals or couples on his YouTube channel and talks through their finances with them.

Anyway, one of the guests on this episode was a crochet business owner who was working nonstop, spending all her profits on yarn, neglecting family and finances, and not building a real profit. This led to burnout. I really, really don’t want for you!

I want you to figure out systems. I want you to set up boundaries, protect your relationships, protect your finances, and be smart about how you build your business so that you don’t have to work 24-7.

The Real Truth:

  • Aligned systems, boundaries, and smart offers allow you to grow without sacrificing your well-being.
  • You do not have to work 24/7: The goal is a business that supports your life, not the other way around.
  • Automation and intentional rest are keys to longevity and happiness.

Proof It Works: Some of my top clients work less than 20 hours a week and make more every year—thanks to the systems and solid foundation they set up.

Tips to Move Forward:

➡️ Set up repeatable systems and automation (scheduling posts, email funnels, etc.)
➡️ Protect family time and health. Your business should serve you.
➡️ Start small: Delegate or automate even one task to reclaim your time.

Lie #6: “If It’s Not Selling, It Means You’re Not Good Enough.”

When sales are low or a launch flops, it’s easy to internalize another one of the biggest crochet business lies: “No one’s buying my pattern—I’m not creative/talented/marketable enough.” But this is a mindset trap.

The Real Truth:

  • Lack of sales says more about strategy and marketing—not your worth or talent.
  • Low sales can be fixed by adjusting your messaging, positioning, SEO, or audience—not by abandoning your identity or comparing yourself to others.
  • Smart business owners seek data, not drama.

Tips to Move Forward:

➡️ If sales are slow, examine the data: Are people finding your shop? Is your message clear? Does your product solve a real problem?
➡️ Tweak your strategy, not your sense of self-worth.
➡️ Don’t compare yourself to the loudest voices online—many are struggling themselves.

The Bottom Line: Question the Lies—Build Your Crochet Business YOUR Way

The biggest success stories in the crochet industry come from questioning the “rules” and building on a foundation personalized to your strengths, needs, and audience. Don’t be boxed in by limiting beliefs or hustle traps—use tested strategies, focus where it counts, and build a business that supports your ideal life.
