As designers, we all love having our worked shared and featured by other bloggers and followers, right? And we love creating those roundup posts, too, because sharing is awesome!

But, there’s a bit of a downside to the whole roundup process and that involves the issue of copyright infringement.

I mean, as a blogger featuring the designs of others, you know your readers want photos…but taking the time to request permission is SUCH A PAIN and TIME SUCK! Honestly, it has hindered me from creating roundups in the past because I don’t want to infringe on someone’s copyright, but I don’t want to spend days chasing down permissions, either.

And I know I’m not alone. There seem to be only a few options for roundup creators:

1) Create a roundup and post images without permission because it’s just easier.

2) Spend hours, even days, sending emails and following up on your requests for permission to post images.

3) Make the product yourself, photograph it, and post it with a link back to the pattern.

Well, honestly, none of these are great for the bloggers or the designers.

Number 1 is copyright infringement.

Number 2 is, like I said, a time suck.

And number 3 could be fun but even more time-intensive.

Lose, lose, lose.

But, what if you could do something to make it easier for bloggers to share your designs (thereby making their shares more likely)?

Really, as a designer, you have a vested interest in making it easy for bloggers to share your designs…don’t make them chase down permissions.

Instead, the optimal solution is to give them permission right up front, like this:

Bloggers: Seeking designs for your upcoming roundup? I’d love for you to feature my work! You have my permission to use one photo in your roundup post as long as a link is provided back to the associated pattern page. Please let me know when your post is published so I can share it on my social media, too. Thank you!

That’s right! On your sidebar or at the bottom of each pattern, you can give permission to bloggers to share an image!

This way (and I have done this myself), they can simply keep a spreadsheet of designers who have pre-authorized use of their photos and just go to those designers blogs when it’s time to create a roundup.

Win. Win.

Genius, right?!

Well, I’m making it even easier for you do give your pre-authorization.

With the HTML code, below, your permissions will be even easier to find.

PRE-AUTHORIZATION TEXT BOX

Here’s the code, just copy and paste into the text editor of your post or the text widget for your blog sidebar:

<p style=”padding: 2px 6px 4px 6px; color: #555555; background-color: #cfccde; border: #6f6f8b 5px; border-top-style: solid;”><b>Bloggers</b>: Seeking designs for your upcoming roundup? I’d love for you to feature my work! You have my permission to use one photo in your roundup post as long as a link is provided back to the associated pattern page. Please let me know when your post is published so I can share it on my social media, too. Thank you!</p>

Now, this text box is set up with my branding colors. If you’d like to edit it to match your site, just replace the pink highlighted hex code with your own.

It’s that easy! Now, as bloggers discover your content, they’ll know that they can use your one image in their roundup and they’re good to go!

NOTE: If you’d like to edit the text of the pre-auth, just do so in the Visual Editor of your blog post. Just be sure the text is all contained in a single paragraph – if you hit enter, that will break the code.

BONUS TIP: Keep an eye out on your referring websites. When you see traffic coming from a roundup post, be sure to go comment on that post and share it to your social media channels. Reciprocity and gratitude go a long, long way in the maker community. <3

Enjoy! I hope this helps you promote your patterns and grow your crochet business!
